Brown bin subscribers can leave out extra garden waste

Posted on October 24, 2023

Residents who are subscribed to the district council brown bin garden waste service in South Oxfordshire or the Vale of White Horse can have extra garden waste collected for free, on their normal collection day only, between 30 October and 10 November.

Householders will be able to put out a maximum of up to four additional sacks of garden waste, per brown bin subscription, next to their brown bin.

To be eligible for collection, the extra waste must go in standard sized (60L) sacks and should only contain natural garden waste such as cut grass, plants or branches.  Alternatively, it can be placed in boxes / containers totalling no more than a standard bin full.

People are asked not to leave out rubble or builders’ waste bags alongside their brown bins as these won’t be collected.

All the garden waste collected will be taken to a facility in Wallingford where it is composted.  The compost will then be sold on to local farmers for use on their farmland.

Cllr Mark Coleman, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Waste at Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “We know people tend to have more garden waste in the Autumn so we offer this chance to ensure any extra waste can be properly composted.  If you have any plants or trees that are overgrowing, now is a good time to attend to them so you can put the cuttings out on your normal collection day during our extra garden waste weeks.”

Cllr Sue Cooper, Cabinet Member for Environment at South Oxfordshire District Council said: “If you’re not able to put your extra garden waste on your home compost, please put it in a sack or box and leave by your brown bin on your next collection day and it will be taken to be composted.  But please, no rubble or builders’ waste bags.”

More information about garden waste collections can be found on the South Oxfordshire garden waste page or the Vale garden waste page.
