Eliot listened to Beethoven’s late quartets as he wrote the poems of which Little Gidding is the last; Opus 135 is Beethoven’s final quartet.
The four members of the Julian Quartet, come together in 2022. inspired by our joint passion for these remarkable works we took our name from Dame Julian of Norwich, the 14th Century Mystic whose “Revelations of Divine Love” are the earliest surviving English language works by a woman, and which Eliot quotes in his Four Quartets: “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well”. The poems are read at our performances by various people to whom the words and music have meant much.
The Quartet were fortunate to perform this programme last Summer to a specially invited audience in the secluded chapel of Little Gidding itself.
