What is Healthy Start?

Posted on March 6, 2025

Healthy Start is a government initiative designed to support families in need by providing money towards buying healthy food and milk. If a person is more than 10 weeks pregnant or has a child under four years old, they may be eligible for this program.

Eligible families will receive a Healthy Start card, which is pre-loaded with funds (up to £34) that can be used in various shops across the UK. The benefit is added to the card every four weeks.

The Healthy Start card can be used to purchase:
• Plain liquid cow’s milk
• Fresh, frozen, and tinned fruit and vegetables
• Fresh, dried, and tinned pulses
• Infant formula milk based on cow’s milk

Additionally, the card can be used to collect:
• Healthy Start vitamins, which support individuals during pregnancy and breastfeeding
• Vitamin drops for babies and young children, suitable from birth to 4 years old.

Good nutrition is essential during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and childhood as it’s a time of rapid growth development and activity.

If you receive universal or family tax credits, Healthy Start makes it easier to pay for food items that are proven to be beneficial for you and your child’s diet.
